How to Use Self-Fulfilling Prophecy to Succeed at Work
In 1948, sociologist Robert Merton coined the term “self-fulfilling prophecy” as a result of his work on Thomas’s Theorem, known for his statement that “If a situation is perceived as real, the consequences of that situation will become one’s reality.”
According to Robert Merton, even if the situation in question is not real, the expectation about it has the potential to turn the situation into reality.
First of all, before starting this blog post, I would like to start with the definition of self-fulfilling prophecy.
Self-fulfilling prophecy refers to a phenomenon where our thoughts and beliefs can affect reality. “If a situation is perceived as real, the consequences of that situation will become one’s reality.”
It is based on the idea that people make an event happen based on their own expectations or beliefs. In other words, a person fulfills their own prophecy. Negative emotions produce negative results, positive emotions produce positive results.

The concept of self-fulfilling prophecy, also known as the Pygmalion effect, was first put forward by sociologist Robert Merton in 1948. Robert Merton explains this concept as “New behaviors resulting from incorrect evaluations of events or conditions cause the false to become ‘true’.” (Merton, 1948)
In Merton’s time, blacks were initially not allowed into unions because they were strikebreakers (strikebreakers were generally people who were not employed by the company before the union dispute, but were hired after or during a strike to keep the organization running). After a while, blacks accepted this situation and made no attempt to join unions. This idea later became accepted by all people, including blacks.
Blacks, on the other hand, consider themselves as strikebreakers and tend to behave in that direction (Rosenthal, Jacobson, 1966).
The origin of the word Pygmalion is based on Ancient Greek philosophy and mythology. Pygmalion, the Prince of Cyprus, was a sculptor. Pygmalion wanted to make an ideal female statue, thinking that all women were flawed creatures. This work, which he named “Galatea,” was so beautiful that Pygmalion fell in love with his own work and prayed to the Goddess Venus for Galatea to turn into a living being. Venus fulfilled this wish and the two lived happily ever after.
As can be seen here, Pygmalion believed in an idea so much that it became real.
So how can we use this phenomenon to increase our success in the workplace? The concept of self-fulfilling prophecy can be an important tool for success in the workplace.
